Manitoba on Right Track with Focused Plan to Create Good Jobs, Grow Economy, Protect Front-line Services for Families: Swan

A $5.5-billion infrastructure plan that will grow Manitoba’s economy and create 58,900 jobs over five years, new legislation that would support businesses in meeting their growing need for skilled workers, and new supports for students to begin skills training and start planning their careers while still in high school were among the highlights of the spring legislative sitting, government house leader Andrew Swan said today.

“We’ve moved forward to implement our commitments from the fall throne speech and spring budget to create good jobs by investing in strategic infrastructure and skills training that will grow our economy,” said Swan.  “These investments mean our young people will have the opportunities they need to get educated, land a good job and build a life right here in Manitoba.”

Progress was made this session to improve apprenticeship and training opportunities that will help Manitoba businesses grow the workforce by 75,000 by 2020, the government house leader added.

“We’re taking a balanced approach.  Instead of making reckless, across-the-board cuts that would hurt families, we’re finding ways to reduce spending responsibly while making targeted investments that keep our province’s economy moving forward,” said Swan.  “The path we’ve chosen creates jobs and improves our infrastructure while keeping life affordable and protecting the services Manitoba families count on.”

He also noted theindependent analysis conducted by the Conference Board of Canada that projects Manitoba’s $5.5-billion investment in core infrastructure will create 58,900 jobs, boosting the province’s economy by $6.3 billion, retail sales by $1.4 billion and increasing exports by $5.4 billion.
