Manitoba Government Invests More Than $870,000 in Northern Municipal Roads

THE PAS—The Manitoba government will invest over $870,000 of new infrastructure funding in key roads, identified by northern Manitoba municipalities, needing repairs, improvements and upgrades, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.

“Northern roads are affected by extreme weather conditions and require more attention to maintain to link communities, and to ensure safe and smooth travel for local families, commercial vehicles and tourists,” said Premier Selinger.  “Manitoba continues to make important and unprecedented investments in infrastructure.  We want rural and northern communities to benefit from the economic growth and good jobs that come with these projects.”

Developed and delivered in partnership with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM), these projects are funded through the Municipal Road Improvement Program which will provide $50 million over five years to repair and renew municipal roads across the province.

“The funding announced today is important because it will not only help tackle the municipal infrastructure deficit, it will have a direct impact on the lives of northern citizens,” said Doug Dobrowolski, president, AMM.  “The AMM is pleased to be part of the selection process, especially since these dollars are over what municipalities currently receive, allowing municipal governments to plan ahead and begin working on important infrastructure projects right away.”

The Town of The Pas will receive $158,810 from the program for road renewal and the Rural Municipality of Kelsey will receive $50,000 for road rehabilitation.

“We are pleased to partner with the Manitoba government in addressing the town’s infrastructure renewal,” said Mayor Alan McLauchlan.  “Infrastructure is a concern of the citizens of the Town of The Pas and is the number one concern of council.  We want to thank the province for providing financial means that enable the town to stretch the municipal dollars and enable infrastructure upgrades.”

Seven Manitoba communities identified 14 municipal-road projects in need of replacement or repair.

“Manitoba’s roads and highways are the fundamental social and economic links between families and communities,” said Premier Selinger.  “Families that live here, the businesses and services that provide jobs and keep communities viable, and the travellers who keep commerce moving, all rely on well maintained roads.  An investment in roads is an investment in the economic future of our province.”

Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution when approaching and in construction zones for their own safety and the safety of workers.
