Province Supports Community Project to Repair, Upgrade Pinawa Pool

PINAWA—Families and area residents here now have improved recreational opportunities with support of $55,000 from the Community Places Program and Manitoba Community Services Council, Housing and Community Development Minister Peter Bjornson announced in the community today.
“Local communities thrive when they have a range of healthy options for recreation, wellness and culture,” said Minister Bjornson. “This support is part of funding for 227 community projects this year where local groups develop and maintain important facilities, with the funding also helping leverage over $13 million from other sources.”
The Community Places Program provides funding and planning assistance to non-profit community organizations to build, upgrade, expand or acquire projects. Applicants contribute to project costs through local fundraising efforts, grants from other sources or donated labour and materials. Projects typically include museums, playgrounds, multi-use and recreation facilities, child-care centres, libraries, community halls and seniors’ facilities.
“This funding for the Pinawa pool included support for critical repairs to the facility’s water system as well as outdoor renovations, replacement of the concrete deck and ladders,” said the minister.
“The Pinawa Pool is a key recreational facility for Pinawa, especially since it provides a venue for activities for people of all ages, as well as summer employment opportunities,” said Mayor Blair C. Skinner, Local Government District of Pinawa. “The project resulted in the replacement of the pool liner, which had reached end of life, along with a number of other aging components. The completed project gives us a facility that will contribute to the wellness of our residents and visitors to Pinawa for at least another couple of decades. We are grateful for the support of the Province of Manitoba and the Manitoba Community Services Council grant that made this project possible.”
The total project value was just over $157,000 with $40,000 provided by the Community Places Program and $15,000 from the Manitoba Community Services Council, Minister Bjornson noted.
Since its inception, Community Places has provided more than $111million to support over 7,300 community construction projects provincewide. These grants have leveraged an estimated $710 million in infrastructure improvements in both rural and urban communities, the minister said.
