Manitoba Government Announces Mary Duncan School Students to Attend We Day Celebrations

THE PAS—Fifty-five students from Mary Duncan School will have the opportunity to attend the We Day celebrations in Winnipeg just ‎one month after a large part of the school was destroyed by a fire, Premier Selinger announced here today.

“The fire at the school was devastating for the whole community but of course it’s the students that are hardest hit,” said Premier Selinger.  “So many people have pulled together to get the school back on its feet so quickly.  It is great to be able to help these kids attend such an inspiring event and have the chance to meet so many of their fellow students from all across the province.”

Premier Selinger made the announcement during a visit to The Pas, where he visited the school’s temporary location and met with students and teachers.

The Manitoba government is providing $10,000, split between Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning and Manitoba Children and Youth Opportunities, to cover the costs of the travel and accommodation for the children and ‎their chaperones while they attend We Day this month.

“I have been so proud of all our students through what has been a really difficult few weeks,” said Tara Manych, principal, Mary Duncan School.  “What they really need right now is some hope.  Knowing that they will be getting their school back plus having the opportunity to participate in something as special as We Day ‎shows them how important they are to the future of our province and community.  This is an adventure they will never forget!”

The Manitoba government provides $40,000 to ensure that rural and northern students can attend We Day and also provides $250,000 to schools throughout Manitoba to participate in the We Act program year-round.  The We Act program inspires students to care about social justice and provides the practical tools needed to turn inspiration into action.

We Day is an opportunity for youth from all over Manitoba and around the globe to come together with the goal of empowering kids to be the change they want to see in the world.  This year’s event takes place at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg on Oct. 29.
