New Facility to Enhance Patient Safety, Care in Central Manitoba: Minister Blady

The Manitoba government has awarded a contract for the construction of a new health centre in Notre Dame de Lourdes, Health Minister Sharon Blady announced today.

“We remain committed to ensuring modern facilities are available in communities across the province to provide high-quality health care,” said Minister Blady.  “This new facility will enhance patient safety, confidentiality and comfort while providing bilingual services for patients from across the region.”

The new 22,601-sq.-ft. facility will be located next to the current personal care home and primary health-care centre, eliminating the need to transfer personal care home residents to the hospital for diagnostic tests.  Services at the 10-bed health centre will include an emergency department, imaging and laboratory diagnostic services, an obstetrical/birth unit, in-patient and out-patient services and bilingual medical education.  In addition, the new hospital’s kitchen will serve the personal care home.

“With appreciation for the collaborative efforts by the Manitoba government and a visionary community, we look forward to seeing this important part of the health campus in Notre Dame de Lourdes take shape,” said Kathy McPhail, chief executive officer, Southern Health–Santé Sud.  “This new working environment will be welcomed by both staff and clients and will improve patient care, confidentiality and comfort.”

The new $20.8-million facility will serve a large area, including St. Claude and Treherne, by providing emergency/urgent services as well as in-patient hospital services.

The hospital is the only fully bilingual acute care facility southwest of Winnipeg, and provides bilingual education for medical students through the University of Manitoba and the University of Ottawa, in partnership with Ste. Anne Hospital and St. Boniface Hospital.

“The community of Notre Dame de Lourdes is thrilled that we are now moving to the construction of a new hospital that will provide quality health services in a bilingual environment for people in this region,” said René Comte, president of the construction committee.  “We have worked tirelessly in co-operation with the Manitoba government and Southern Health–Santé Sud to realize this project and the community contribution continues to be outstanding.”

Construction is expected to start later this spring and should be complete in the spring of 2016, the minister said.
