Families in Northwest Winnipeg Celebrate Grand Opening of New Amber Trails Community School

Education and Advanced Learning Minister Peter Bjornson today congratulated parents, staff, students and the community of Amber Trails on the grand opening of a new 85,923-sq.-ft., $25-million school that will enhance the quality of learning for students from kindergarten to Grade 8.

“Thanks to our growing economy, more young families are choosing to build futures right here in Manitoba,” said Minister Bjornson.  “I’m very pleased that our government continues to recognize the need to invest in schools and communities so we can provide high-quality education to students throughout Manitoba.”

Amber Trails Community School can accommodate 625 students and features a new 64 space child-care centre with an additional 2,000 sq. ft. of flexible space for nursery/kindergarten and a before-and-after program.  Other features include new lab spaces for manufacturing/construction and home-economics programs, and an outdoor learning environment.  The project design is targeted to achieve LEED Gold classification, meet the Manitoba government’s green building/sustainability practices and incorporate Manitoba Hydro Power Smart technologies and incentives.

“Hundreds of tradespeople, architects, engineers, division officials and community members worked on this significant new capital project,” said Minister Bjornson.  “This project is good for students, good for the community and good for our economy, and I applaud the hard work of everyone who came together to bring this vision to life.”

Since 1999, the Manitoba government has invested more than $1 billion in public school capital projects including 21 new schools and 14 replacement schools, and has completed extensive renovations and additions to dozens of existing schools.
