Manitoba Government Recognizes Outstanding Achievement by Manitoba Educators

Instilling a Love of Learning, Building a Better Future for Young Manitobans: Minister Allum

Eight Manitoba educators have received the Manitoba’s Celebration of Excellence in Teaching – Minister’s Awards, recognizing innovative and effective teaching practices that have had a profound impact on student learning, Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum announced today.

“This prestigious award recognizes outstanding educators who work tirelessly to inspire their students and instil a lifelong love of learning,” said Minister Allum.  “Through their hard work and dedication, these educators are helping to create tomorrow’s leaders and build a better future for young Manitobans.”

Award recipients include:

  • Teaching Excellence – Early Years:  Curt McKinnon, Stevenson-Britannia School, St. James-Assiniboia School Division;
  • Teaching Excellence – Middle Years:  Alyssa Herkert, École Tuxedo Park, Pembina Trails School Division;
  • Teaching Excellence – Senior Years:  Rachel Mitchell, University College of the North Adult Learning Centre;
  • Outstanding New Teacher:  Brittany Melnyk, O’Kelly School, Brandon School Division;
  • Team Collaboration:  Melanie Cote, Janet Hammersley and Gordon Patton, Kelsey Learning Centre, Kelsey School Division; and
  • Outstanding School Leader:  Marc Poirier, ÉcoleMarie-Anne-Gaboury, Louis Riel School Division.

“Our government values the hard work that thousands of educators across Manitoba do every day for our students.  Their dedication continues to build a strong future in our province,” Minister Allum added.

The minister’s awards were initiated in 2006.  Award recipients can be nominated by students, parents/guardians, fellow teachers, school and school division administrators and school trustees. Each award winner receives a certificate of recognition and a $500 cash award.
