Province Announces Angling Season Opens Tomorrow

Manitoba’s angling season opens tomorrow across much of southern Manitoba, offering the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and go fishing in the many great lakes and streams across the province, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Tom Nevakshonoff announced today.

“Recreational fishing is a huge part of the Manitoba economy and responsible management of this great natural resource is critical,” Minister Nevakshonoff said.  “With more than 100,000 lakes, as well as rivers and streams to visit, fishing is a great recreational activity that creates jobs through tourism, hospitality and the need for supplies.”

The minister noted another important date to remember is the annual free summer family fishing weekend on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14.  Anglers will be able to fish without a licence provincewide, except in national parks where a federal licence is required.

Anglers fishing without a licence during the free fishing weekend will be allowed to keep a conservation limit of fish, which varies by species.  All other rules and regulations apply as outlined in the 2015 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide, which also defines the boundaries and details the opening dates for fishing in other parts of the province.

Fishing licences are available at hundreds of retail outlets and the 2015 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide is available online at www.manitobafisheries.com.
