Manitoba Government Amends Legislation to Improve Access to Engineering and Geoscience Jobs
– – –Changes Would Help Move More Skilled Workers Into Good Jobs: Minister Braun
The Manitoba government introduced proposed amendments to both the Engineering and Geoscientific Professions Act and the Architects Act, Labour and Immigration Minister Erna Braun announced today.
“Budget 2015 is focused on our plan to continue to grow the economy and create even more good jobs. As we embark on a significant number of major infrastructure projects in our province, these changes will give employers more opportunities to find skilled workers,” said Minister Braun.
The amendment would help engineers and geoscientists trained in other jurisdictions and overseas to have their credentials recognized to work here in Manitoba.
“We are so pleased the government of Manitoba is moving forward in this regard,” said Howard Procychyn, president, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM). “By recognizing the qualifications of those with a limited scope license from other provinces and of foreign-trained engineers, we will see job growth and be able to keep up with the growing demand for services.”
Minister Braun also introduced proposed legislation to amend the Architects Act. The amendments would modernize the act in several key areas, including continuing education.
“Ensuring our act is modernized and accurately reflects the latest professional standards is paramount to Manitoba architects,” said Lee McCormick, president, Manitoba Association of Architects (MAA). “On behalf of our membership, we are grateful the minister saw this as a priority and worked so collaboratively with us.”
Proposed changes to the both acts come after extensive collaboration with APEGM and MAA, the minister noted.
“Both of these organizations have worked hard and been successful in bringing forward ideas and discussions that promote co-operation of their professions and have sought to modernize their associations to meet the new and changing labour market needs in Manitoba,” said Minister Braun. “These two amendments show that when government listens and works together with stakeholders, we all benefit.”
