Province Marks 145th Birthday

Canadian Museum For Human Rights Named Star Attraction

The Manitoba government celebrated Manitoba Day with the launch of the annual vacation guide, and the designation of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights as a Star Attraction, Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport and Consumer Protection Minister Ron Lemieux announced today.

“There are Manitoba Day events happening all around our great province and what better way to celebrate than with the launch of the vacation guide,” Minister Lemieux said.  “From the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to Bruce the Mosasaur, Manitoba is where Canada’s Heart Beats.”

This year, May 12 marks the 145th anniversary of the passing of the Manitoba Act by Parliament, making Manitoba the fifth province to join Confederation.  All across the province, museums and other attractions are hosting events or offering free admission to mark this special occasion, the minister said.

Minister Lemieux also noted Manitoba will re-launch the Star Attractions tourism program for 2015-16 with two categories – destination and regional attractions.  One of the newest Star Attractions is the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) in Winnipeg.  Designation as one of the more than 50 Star Attractions means the location has met certain criteria for accessibility, professionalism and the overall visitor experience.

“We are proud to be part of the Star Attractions program,” said Gail Stephens, interim president and CEO, CMHR.  “We know that more than 90 per cent of our visitors think the museum should be seen by as many people as possible, and this program is one of the ways we can encourage people to come to the museum and be inspired.”

The Manitoba vacation guide is filled with travel ideas and information on many great tourist destinations for first-time visitors as well as people who have lived in Manitoba all their lives, Minister Lemieux said.  The guide has been distributed throughout the province and is also available through Travel Manitoba information centres, chambers of commerce and Manitoba liquor stores.
