Standing Hearing for Inquest Into Death of Sheldon McKay

A standing hearing will take place to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Sheldon McKay, 30, of Winnipeg.

On May 3, 2006, McKay was found unresponsive in his cell at the Stony Mountain Institution.  Emergency medical personnel attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful.  The cause of death was asphyxia due to neck and chest compression, and the manner of death was homicide.  Four individuals responsible for his death were charged and convicted.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest has been called by the chief medical examiner.  Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths for the purpose of finding out what, if anything, could be done to help prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.

Only those parties granted standing by the judge can participate and question witnesses at the inquest.  Those interested in applying for standing should contact Kathrine Basarab, inquest counsel, at 204-945-2852 or kathrine.basarab@gov.mb.caby June 29.

The standing hearing will be held on July 15 at 1 p.m. in Courtroom 405 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.
