Statement By Premier Greg Selinger on the Appointment of Janice Filmon as Next Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba

On behalf of the people and province of Manitoba, I want to welcome and congratulate Her Honour Janice Filmon, our newly appointed lieutenant-governor.

Mrs. Filmon, Manitoba’s 25th lieutenant-governor, has a long and proud history of giving back to the people of Manitoba and she will serve our province well in her new role.  As a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba, she has devoted her life to public service and volunteerism.  In recent years, she has been most closely associated with the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation and Manitoba A.L.I.V.E. (A Leadership Initiative in Voluntary Efforts), which promotes volunteerism among high school students.  She is a strong, dedicated person and I have no doubt she will make an excellent lieutenant-governor.

In welcoming Her Honour, I want to extend my thanks to His Honour Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee and his wife Anita Lee for their service.  Mr. Lee served us all in the same steady and dignified way that enabled him to advance so many causes important to Manitoba’s Chinese-Canadian community.  Manitoba families are fortunate to have been served by an individual of such high character.
