Investments in Local and Regional Streets, Bridges and Underpasses Supported by the Building Manitoba Fund: Minister Caldwell

More than 160 local Winnipeg roads have received improvements in 2015 due to investments by the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg including more than 25 projects for the southern region of the city, Municipal Government Minister Drew Caldwell and Acting Deputy Mayor Janice Lukes, City of Winnipeg, announced today.

“These infrastructure improvements help Winnipeggers enjoy their city more, invest in the long-term viability of our roads and stimulate the local economy,” said Minister Caldwell.  “Winnipeg’s roadways are a huge component of Manitoba’s transportation industry and strategic investments help ease of movement for residents and visitors alike.”

“The city’s 2015 Budget dedicated $103 million – a record level investment – into Winnipeg’s roads this year,” said Lukes, who is also the chair of Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “Improvements to Winnipeg’s streets are vital to the continued well-being of our residential communities and the businesses that serve them.”

The Manitoba government has committed more than $59 million from the Building Manitoba Fund for Winnipeg road improvements in 2015.  This includes the Manitoba-Winnipeg Infrastructure Agreement (MWIA), which is a part of a larger commitment to invest $250 million over five years for Winnipeg roads, as part of the province’s core infrastructure plan.

This year’s funding for road surfacing, sidewalks and curb renewals will help renew more than 160 local and regional streets, bridges, overpasses and back lanes in Winnipeg, and support sidewalk and other street-related projects in every neighbourhood.

“This investment is important, as Winnipeg, like other cities throughout Canada, faces aging infrastructure issues,” said Minister Caldwell.  “This helps renew and restore our roads.”
