Province Removes Time Limit for Cottage Development on Lots Purchased From First-come, First-served Cottage Lot Program

The Manitoba government will now ensure Manitobans have more time to build a cottage after the purchase of a lot on Crown land through the First-come, First-served Cottage Lot Program, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Tom Nevakshonoff announced today.
“More and more Manitobans want to be able to live out the dream of owning a cottage and we want to help make that happen,” Minister Nevakshonoff said. “Removing the two-year time limit to finish building a cottage will give people the time they need to make their dream a reality.”
The minister noted that by dropping the requirement for completion of a cottage within two years it is hoped more people will be encouraged to buy lots from the First-come, First-served Cottage Lot Program. An additional eight lots across the province remaining from the 2015 Spring Cottage Lot Draw have also been added to the First-come, First-served Cottage Lot Program.
There are now 22 lots available for lease in provincial parks and 311 lots available for sale without development time-frame restrictions in other areas of the province. Since the first-come, first-served program began in 2009, 520 lots have been added to the program with 187 of the lots sold or leased.
For the eight newly added lots, applications will be accepted in person from Aug. 24 to Sept. 4 at 200 Saulteaux Cres. in Winnipeg. Mail-in applications will be accepted as of Sept. 8 and applications from non-residents of Manitoba will be accepted starting on Dec. 22. The balance of the inventory is open for application now.
