New Cyber Security Curriculum at Sisler High School Preparing Students for In-demand Jobs: Premier Selinger
High school students throughout Manitoba will soon be able to access courses that will prepare them for in-demand careers in entry-level information technology, networking, cyber security and virtualization through Sisler High School’s Virtual Network and Cyber Security Centre, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.
“This is a world-class program that equips Manitoba students with skills that are highly valued by the IT industry,” said Premier Selinger. “We are investing in making it available to even more students so they can get the jobs of tomorrow right here at home.”
Information technology, networking and cyber security jobs are in high demand, and the school is working closely with employers and leading companies to link students to paid internships, work experience and jobs after graduation, the premier said. These companies include Complex Games, MTS, EPIC, Seccuris and Octipi Managed Services.
Students will also have access to dual credits through partnerships with Red River College and the University of Winnipeg for advanced placement and post-secondary credits, to put them on a fast track toward furthering their education, the premier added.
Sisler High School’s Virtual Network and Cyber Security Centre is a leader in cyber-security education in Canada, and as one of the most specialized information technology high school programs in Canada, its students are competing in cyber security events and winning national and international awards, Premier Selinger said.
Last year, the premier announced an investment of almost $300,000 for the centre, which was used to purchase equipment now being used by students, infrastructure upgrades and exterior signage.
There are currently 200 students registered in the program for 2015-16 school year.
