Manitoba Government Unveils Star Celebrations Program to Promote Tourism
– – –Celebration of Major Festivals,Events, Gatherings: Minister Lemieux
Four outstanding events have received the Manitoba government’s new Star Celebrations designation and one attraction has been designated as a Manitoba Star Attraction, Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport and Consumer Protection Minister Ron Lemieux announced today.
“Manitoba has a tremendous wealth of high-quality events, festivals and attractions. I’m proud to recognize the first four designated Star Celebrations events that showcase our unique culture, heritage and identity,” Minister Lemieux said. “Manitoba is where Canada’s Heart Beats and major events and festivals are an opportunity to demonstrate the collective heart of our communities and the diversity of our culture.”
The first organizations to receive Star Celebration designation are the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market, Festival du Voyageur, the Manito Ahbee Festival and the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba. This designation is awarded to festivals and events that meet specific criteria, provide a superior visitor experience, and engage visitors in unique experiences and local culture, the minister said.
“We are pleased to be among the first groups selected as a Star Celebration,” said Sandy Fox, president, St. Norbert Farmers’ Market. “We look forward to sharing our unique atmosphere and variety of produce, baking and crafts with visitors and home-grown tourists alike.”
“Manitoba is known for providing tourism experiences that are immersive, authentic and reflective of our roots,” said Colin Ferguson, president and CEO, Travel Manitoba. “The Star Celebrations program provides additional marketing support for tourism experiences that bring together our communities and our province as we welcome visitors to experience Manitoba’s incredible culture and hospitality.”
The Arborg and District Multicultural Heritage Village has also received the Manitoba Star Attractions designation. Located in the community of Arborg, the heritage village consists of historical buildings including a church, school, community hall and residences that tell the story of the people, culture and history of the region. Guided tours are offered to visitors.
Minister Lemieux noted the application process for 2016 Star Celebrations is still open and organizers of events, festivals and gatherings have until Nov. 6 to apply. Detailed program criteria and the application process are available online at www.gov.mb.ca/chc/tourism_sec/index.html.
