Investment of $600,000 in New Science Lab Benefits Students at Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute: Premier Selinger

THE PAS—Students at Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute in The Pas are now benefiting from a new state-of-the-art science classroom, thanks to an investment of more than $600,000 by the province, Premier Greg Selinger announced here today.

“We want students to gain the skills and knowledge to succeed in life and build their futures right here at home,” said Premier Selinger.  “That’s why we are investing in making sure that students in The Pas have access to quality educational opportunities in science, so they graduate with the science skills needed to open the door to a rewarding career.”

Funding was provided to the Kelsey School Division for the renovation of an existing chemistry lab into a state-of-the-art science classroom.  This project is part of the province’s $25-million science lab renewal program that will benefit thousands of students throughout Manitoba by providing them with modern laboratory spaces and state-of-the-art equipment, the premier noted.  New equipment and classroom space support the implementation of Manitoba’s updated high school science curriculum, he added.

“This investment will ensure students at Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute can continue to learn in a safe, modern environment that sparks their interest in science,” said Vaughn Wadelius, board chair, Kelsey School Division.  “The Kelsey School Division appreciates this support, which will help to promote learning in The Pas for many years to come.”

The project consists of a complete upgrade to an existing chemistry lab and adjacent storage/preparatory room.  The existing lab was original to the school, which was built in 1968.  Renovations include new flooring, ceilings, finishes, millwork, fume hood, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and equipment.
