Province Announces Greenbelt Planted Along Centreport Canada Way

Project to Help Reduce Effects of Greenhouse-gas Emissions, Improve Public Safety: Minister Nevakshonoff

The Manitoba government is planting 150 white spruce trees along CentrePort Canada Way as part of efforts to reduce the effects of greenhouse-gas emissions, while improving public safety by blocking wind and decreasing drifting snow in the winter, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Tom Nevakshonoff announced today.

“This initiative is part of our plan to reduce greenhouse gas in Manitoba and we are pleased to be working with CentrePort Canada on specific measures to help protect the environment and beautify the area,” said Minister Nevakshonoff.  “The greenbelt will also act as a wind block, which will help improve public safety for a growing number of drivers who rely on the inland port highway.”

The greenbelt will be planted this fall and feature trees ranging in height from seven to eight feet along a stretch of Centreport Canada Way near the intersection of the Sturgeon Access Road.  In the spring, native vegetation and grasses will be added to the greenbelt, providing additional benefits such as erosion prevention and highway maintenance reduction, the minister said.

“We appreciate the province’s efforts to work with us on increasing our own sustainability and this project fits well with our development goals,” said Diane Gray, president and CEO, CentrePort Canada Inc.  “As champions of a ‘live, work, play, learn’ approach to development, it makes sense to adopt landscaping techniques that have multiple benefits for citizens and businesses in the area.”

CentrePort Canada is a 20,000-acre tri-modal inland port and foreign trade zone located in the northwest corner of Winnipeg and the Rural Municipality of Rosser.  To date, more than 200 acres have been developed or are in development by 40 different companies.
