National Jury Selects 15 Winners from Nearly 70 Submissions

Premier Greg Selinger today celebrated the creative excellence and growing reputation of Manitoba architects, professional interior designers and landscape architects by presenting the Premier’s Awards for Design Excellence (PADE) to 15 outstanding projects.

“Our province is undergoing a renaissance of innovative architecture and design with local firms earning regional, national and international recognition,” said Premier Greg Selinger.  “This talented group has been instrumental in transforming our city and province, by bringing vibrant, cutting-edge design to the forefront.  Today, we honour and celebrate these significant achievements.”

Premier Selinger presented awards in the categories of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and small projects.  Of these, seven were awards of excellence and eight awards of merit.

“We are so pleased to have received the enthusiastic support of Premier Selinger and thank him for his leadership and willingness to recognize and nurture design excellence in Manitoba,” said Art Martin, managing partner, architecture, Stantec, and chair, 2015 PADE Committee.

A total of 68 submissions were received representing projects constructed throughout Manitoba, across Canada and internationally, during the past five years.  This included submissions for projects in Birds Hill Park, Brandon, Churchill, Clearwater, Gillam, Grand Beach, Steinbach, Winkler and Winnipeg, along with work in Grand–Métis, Que., Nunavut, Regina, Vancouver and London, England.

Each was reviewed by a prominent jury of respected design professionals that included Dan Hanganu, architect, Montreal; Elsa Lam, editor, Canadian Architect, Toronto; Stanley Sun, professional interior designer, Toronto; Peter Briggs, landscape architect, Anchorage, Alaska; and Martin Cash, lay juror, veteran business reporter and columnist, Winnipeg Free Press.

The Premier’s Award for Design Excellence originated as the Product Awards in the 1970s.  The bi-annual awards, last presented in the 1980s, have been reinstated to honour the significant contributions made by architects and professional interior designers to the social, cultural, artistic and economic development of Manitoba, Premier Selinger said.  A committee comprising the Manitoba Association of Architects, Professional Interior Design Institute of Manitoba and Manitoba Association of Landscape Architects spearheads the initiative.

Award-winning architectural and sculptural glass artist, Warren Carther of Carther Studio in Winnipeg, was commissioned to design the 2015 PADE.  The ellipse, a symbol for the human eye, uses dichroic glass for bold colour that shifts depending on one’s angle of view, referencing how each person views design from their own vantage point.
