January 2016 Marks the 100th Anniversary of Manitoba Becoming First Province to Grant Some Women Right to Vote: Minister Irvin-Ross

The Manitoba government is celebrating Women’s History Month with a special reception at the Legislative Building today at 11:45 a.m. to recognize the many achievements and contributions of women in this province, Family Services Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross, minister responsible for the status of women said.

“Through their talent, vision and determination, Manitoba women have achieved many firsts that have resulted in positive social change,” said Minister Irvin-Ross.  “This includes Manitoba being the first province in Canada to grant some women the right to vote, a significant step forward in the struggle for women’s rights.”

The minister noted that January 2016 will mark the 100th anniversary of some Manitoba women being granted the right to vote.  She paid tribute to the women who lead the suffrage movement for this remarkable achievement.

Guest speakers at this year’s event include Amanda Lathlin, MLA for The Pas, the first Indigenous woman elected to the provincial legislature, and former MLA Muriel Smith, a member of the Order of Canada and the first woman in Canada to serve as deputy premier.  Each is a dedicated advocate for gender equality and social change, as well as being outstanding role models for young women, the minister said.

Women’s History Month is held nationally in October to celebrate the advances and contributions of women in all facets of Canadian life.  Minister Irvin-Ross said the annual celebration provides an opportunity to recognize the many achievements by Manitoba women and to reflect on the progress that continues to be made in ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all citizens.
