Throne Speech 2015 Invests in a Bright Future for Brandon

New School, Funding for the North Hill Campus Among Highlights: Premier Selinger

The Manitoba government has presented its vision to build Brandon for the future in its 2015 throne speech, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.

“The Manitoba government understands the priorities of families in Brandon and recognizes the support this city needs meet the needs of its growing population,” Premier Selinger said.  “That is why the throne speech commits to smart, strategic investments in education and infrastructure projects, so that young people have the best opportunities to succeed and families have a safer, faster commute.”

The throne speech highlighted projects such as:

  • building a brand new school for Brandon’s growing south end;
  • committing to redevelop the Assiniboine Community College’s North Hill Campus;
  • extending the province’s core infrastructure plan by three years to a total of $10 billion, with targeted funding to build better roads and bridges to meet Brandon’s growing population demands;
  • partnering with the federal government to expand the Daly Overpass;
  • creating a new community infrastructure fund to help renew facilities families use every day, like community centres and curling rinks including in Brandon;
  • increasing flood protection for Brandon;
  • providing stable, predictable and long-term funding to Brandon that will allow the city to plan and develop for the future; and
  • adding more mixed-use and affordable housing for Brandon including new housing for students at Brandon University.

“This is a clear plan for families that targets investments now to move forward and build the Brandon we all want to see in the future,” said Municipal Government Minister Drew Caldwell.  “This is a plan that builds Brandon up with strategic decisions that help young people succeed and help families get ahead.”
