Rail Relocation, Funding to Help Commuters, Major Commitment to Waste-water Upgrades Among Highlights of Throne Speech: Premier Selinger

The Manitoba government is focusing on making smart, strategic investments to meet the needs of Winnipeg families now and into the future, highlighted by a new partnership with the city to help it address its infrastructure deficit, Premier Greg Selinger announced today following the delivery of the 2015 speech from the throne.

“We know that Winnipeggers want their provincial government to make the kinds of targeted investments that will help families get where they want to go more comfortably and quickly, and build a vibrant capital city,” Premier Selinger said.  “This throne speech lays out a vision to work in partnership on the shared goals of Winnipeggers to create a modern, inclusive city.”

The speech highlighted a vision to make the lives of every Winnipegger better by:

  • initiating a plan to move rail lines out of Winnipeg to provide new options to address aging infrastructure, help families save time on their daily commute, improve safety and re-imagine urban renewal in the province’s capital city;
  • supporting the City of Winnipeg with $1 billion under a new partnership over the next five years
  • replacing the Louise Bridge, extending the Chief Peguis Trail westward and upgrading Kenaston Boulevard and pave roads in every neighbourhood in the city;
  • working with the City of Winnipeg on the Waverley Street underpass and easing traffic congestion on Marion Street so that families spend less time stuck in traffic;
  • completing the southwest leg of the rapid transit corridor connecting the University of Manitoba to downtown Winnipeg, and investing in more electric busses designed and manufactured right here in Manitoba;
  • committing new funding for new and existing recreation centres for Winnipeg;
  • committing an additional $100 million for upgrades to Winnipeg’s waste-water treatment plants to ensure they meet the highest waste-water quality and environmental standards;
  • modernizing and providing additional funding for public transit while keeping it affordable for those who ride the bus every day;
  • committing to partner on future phases of rapid transit;
  • partnering with the City of Winnipeg to implement a new curb-side composting system;
  • supporting a new state-of-the-art CancerCare Manitoba facility;
  • investing in the expansion of the Women’s Health Clinic;
  • creating a brand new Pan-Am Clinic, in partnership with the Reh-Fit Centre;
  • creating a new breast milk bank to enable women to safely donate and access breast milk;
  • committing to fund the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s new Inuit Art Centre; and
  • supporting the next phase of development at Assiniboine Park.

“The new partnership is a game changer for Winnipeg,” said Municipal Government Minister Drew Caldwell.  “We’re ready to take the next step by entering into a new partnership with the city to fund shared priorities to benefit Winnipeg families.”
