Manitoba Announces Appointment of New Provincial Court Judge

Attorney General Gord Mackintosh today announced the appointment of Kael McKenzie to the provincial court.

“Judge McKenzie brings a unique perspective to provincial court, with a combination of legal and professional expertise that will serve him well in adjudicating matters that are important to Manitobans,” said Minister Mackintosh.  “He also has been an active volunteer within our community, giving his time and dedication to many cultural and law-related organizations.”

After receiving his law degree from the University of Manitoba in 2006, McKenzie practised family, commercial and civil law with Chapman Goddard Kagan in Manitoba.  He has been a Crown attorney in the province for five years.  Previously, McKenzie served in the Canadian Forces and managed on-campus security services at a local university.

McKenzie has served the community as a volunteer for numerous organizations including the Canadian Bar Association, the Manitoba Bar Association, Winnipeg Folk Festival, St. James Historical Museum, the North American Indigenous Games and Rainbow Resource Centre.

McKenzie was selected from a list of candidates recommended by an independent judicial nominating committee, chaired by Chief Judge Ken Champagne.  This committee also included three community representatives, the Law Society of Manitoba, the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association and a provincial court judge.  The appointment is effective immediately.
