Manitoba Government Building 24 New Affordable Family Homes in Thompson

The Manitoba government is investing $8.4 million to build 24 new affordable family homes in Thompson, Housing and Community Development Minister Mohinder Saran announced today.

“We know housing costs in the north can make it difficult for families with lower or moderate incomes to find safe, secure housing,” said Minister Saran.  “This investment will make a real difference for families in Thompson, while helping meet our commitment to add new affordable housing units across the province.”

The 25,406-sq.-ft. project on Cambridge Street will include five townhouse-style wood frame buildings, which include a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom units.  Three main-floor units will be fully accessible for families with a disability.

“Through this partnership, the biggest benefit for our organization is the ability to provide decent, safe and affordable housing to the Indigenous and non-Indigenous population in Thompson and surrounding communities,” said Chief Michael Yellowback, Manto Sipi First Nation, and, chair, Keewatin Housing Association Inc. (KHAI).

Minister Saran noted all units will meet Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart standards.  The rents will be a mix of market rents and rent geared-to-income.

KHAI was established by the Keewatin Tribal Council in 1983 and currently operates 79 rental units in Thompson.  For more information, visit www.ktc.ca.

The minister noted construction is expected to be complete as early as the summer of 2016.
