Manitoba Government Partners with Lions Club to Build Affordable Housing for Seniors in Thompson

The Manitoba government is partnering with the Thompson Lions Senior Manor Non-Profit Housing Co-operative Inc. to develop plans for new affordable housing complex in Thompson, Housing and Community Development Minister Mohinder Saran announced today.

“Safe, affordable housing is extremely important for seniors because it lets them continue to live productive lives close to their families, friends and communities,” Minister Saran said.  “We are pleased to partner with the Lions as they develop their plans for this exciting complex.”

Thompson Lions Senior Manor Non-Profit Housing Co-operative Inc. is a volunteer board that formed to promote the development of affordable seniors’ housing in Thompson.  The province has conditionally approved funding of $2.25 million toward the total estimated project cost of $7 million, Minister Saran said.

The proposed complex is a 32,553-sq.-ft., two-storey, 30-unit wood-frame building, with a mix of one- and two-bedroom units and shared common amenity space.  The building will meet Manitoba Housing and Community Development’s accessible and modesty guidelines as well as meet Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart standards for energy efficiency.  The rents are required to meet Manitoba Housing and Community Development affordable rental rates.

“We want to give Thompson seniors more affordable options so they can continue to live comfortably in their retirement years,” said Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton at an event in Thompson today on behalf of Minister Saran.  “This new partnership is part of our commitment to help seniors age safely in place across Manitoba.”

This affordable housing complex will also contribute toward Manitoba Housing and Community Development’s commitment to support the development of 500 affordable and 500 social housing units.
