Standing Hearing for Inquest into Death of Dwayne Flett

A standing hearing will take place to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Dwayne Flett, 32, of St. Theresa Point First Nation.

On the morning of April 15, 2015, Flett was found hanging from a bed sheet during a routine cell check at the Stony Mountain Institution.  Staff and emergency medical personnel attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful.  An autopsy concluded the cause of death was hanging and the manner of death was suicide.

Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest has been called by the chief medical examiner.  Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths for the purpose of finding out what, if anything, might be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Before the inquest begins, the judge will decide who can participate in the process and question witnesses.  Individuals and groups may make an application to be granted standing and participate in the inquest.  Those interested in applying for standing or wishing further information should contact Stephanie Harland, inquest counsel, at 204-945-5552 or stephanie.harland@gov.mb.ca by May 6.

The standing hearing will be held on May 19 at 9:00 a.m. in Courtroom 406 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg.
