Earl and Countess of Wessex to Visit Winnipeg June 22

Premier Brian Pallister today announced Their Royal Highnesses, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, will visit Manitoba on June 22.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie will tour the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada (RAMWC), have a private meeting with the lieutenant-governor and the premier, and participate in two individual functions during their brief visit to the province.

The earl will participate in a ceremony at the RAMWC to honour 50 young Manitobans who have achieved their gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.  Meanwhile, the countess will visit the Deer Lodge Centre, which is currently celebrating its 100th year of service to veterans and the people of Manitoba.

“Manitobans have a long, proud relationship with members of the Royal Family and we are both delighted and honoured the earl and countess have chosen to include Manitoba in their visit to Canada,” said the premier.  “Although His Royal Highness has visited Manitoba several times, the last time being in 2008, this is Her Royal Highnesses first visit to the province.”

Attendance at the ceremony at the RAMWC will be limited to Duke of Edinburgh Award recipients and their families.  The public is invited to welcome the countess on the grounds of the Deer Lodge Centre at 1:15 p.m., when she, accompanied by the premier, will visit with veterans, residents and staff.
