Provincial Funding for Downtown Brandon Revitalization

Matching Grants to Make Downtown Brandon more Vibrant, Attractive: Clarke

The province is providing funding for a grant program that encourages building owners and main floor tenants in downtown Brandon to make building and exterior storefront improvements, Indigenous and Municipal Relations Minister Eileen Clarke announced today.

“Attractive buildings enhance the character of a neighbourhood and draw more people to the community, which helps local businesses to thrive,” said Clarke.  “Manitoba’s new government is pleased to work together with our partners to make this urban centre a more appealing place to live, work and spend time with family and friends.”

The Downtown Façade and Storefront Improvement Grant Program provides matching support of up to $15,000 for each facade facing a sidewalk for eligible storefront improvements.  Additional support may be available for corner buildings or buildings with more than one facade on a public street.

“A well-designed storefront contributes significantly to the quality of a neighbourhood’s streetscape,” said Steve McMillan, board chair, Brandon Downtown Development Corporation.  “Our organization has identified façade improvements and storefront upgrades as an area of focus likely to contribute to an economically vibrant downtown and we are excited about this new opportunity for business owners.”

The applicant must either be the property owner or the main floor commercial tenant.  Chain franchises and government offices and agencies are not eligible for the grants.

“As downtown revitalization is one of council’s 10 strategic priorities, I am confident this provincial grant program will augment our continuing efforts to breathe new life into our city’s heritage district,” said Mayor Rick Chrest, City of Brandon.  “I encourage eligible property owners to take advantage of this opportunity for matching investment and join us in strengthening the aesthetic character of downtown Brandon.”

Improvements should upgrade the building exterior, enhance pedestrian comfort and preserve and maintain the heritage of a building.  To receive the maximum grant of $15,000 per project, eligible work must include three different components that make up a cohesive design, such as:

• new/additional lighting;
• signage;
• brick/masonry restoration;
• windows, doors and entranceways;
• awnings/canopies;
• facade cleaning and painting;
• the repair or replacement of cornices, parapets or other exterior architectural features; and
• accessibility improvements.

“Downtown Brandon is a unique neighbourhood with its own culture, history and sense of community,” said Len Isleifson, MLA for Brandon East, who attended an event today in Brandon on behalf of the minister.  “This program will help us enhance this important part of our city and attract more businesses, residents, investment and visitors to the area.”

Total costs for the program will depend on the type and number of applications received.  Applications are being taken now and the deadline is Oct. 7.  Application forms for the program are available by visiting www.renaissancebrandon.ca or by phoning 204-720-0342.
