Manitoba Celebrates Local Paralympic Team Members

Manitobans can be proud of the accomplishments of the entire Canadian Paralympic Team and the province wants to pay special tribute to the athletes, coaches, officials and support staff with ties to our province, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Rochelle Squires announced today.

“There’s nothing like representing your country on the international stage.  We want to share the pride of our province with the Paralympic team members who got their start here,” Squires said.  “It takes great effort, determination and perseverance to reach this level so it’s important to recognize the achievement.”

Squires will attend an event this evening to honour athletes, coaches and support staff from Manitoba that went to Rio or helped the team get ready to compete on the international stage.  The Manitoba government congratulates the following athletes for their efforts and accomplishments:
• Chantal Givens, paratriathlon;
• Leanne Muldrew, sitting volleyball;
• Michelle Stilwell, para-athletics (gold);
• Meghan Montgomery, para-rowing (bronze); and
• Ian Chan, co-captain of wheelchair rugby team.

“Let’s build on our passion for top-level amateur sport,” the minister added.  “Manitoba is gearing up to host the 2017 Canada Summer Games and we look forward to welcoming more than 4,000 athletes and coaches as well as 20,000 visitors to Manitoba next summer.”
