Province Proclaims October as Sustainability Month

As part of an ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and action on climate change the Manitoba government has proclaimed October as Sustainability Month, Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox announced today.

“Sustainable development can help address local and global challenges including climate change, poverty and health issues,” Cox said.  “It’s important to our economy and our environment that government works with individuals, business, Indigenous communities and educational institutions to support and celebrate sustainability initiatives.”

The Manitoba government will celebrate Sustainability Month throughout October with recognition of sustainability education, innovative thinking and waste-reduction efforts.  Celebrating Sustainability Month is a way to showcase the initiatives in the province that are raising awareness, engaging wider communities in sustainability initiatives and honouring the work carried out by various individuals and institutions, the minister noted.

“We applaud the Manitoba government on the proclamation of Sustainability Month, which reminds Manitobans of the positive impact of sustainable initiatives and encourages responsible practices like recycling beverage containers,” said Ken Friesen, executive director, Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association.  “Recycle Everywhere is proud of its continued work in partnership with the province and together with all Manitobans, as we can continue to increase beverage container recycling rates.  We look forward to working together on sustainable initiatives for years to come.”

A Manitoba Education for Sustainable Development Working Group has been established to bring together a network of organizations aiming to promote and enhance a culture of sustainability in Manitoba, the minister said.  Working with the support of the province and partner organizations, the group is organizing and promoting sustainability events throughout October, she noted.

The month kicked off with Sustainability Night 20X20 and will continue with other events including tree plantings, commitments for further waste reduction and the expansion of recycling opportunities all across the province.  More details on those initiatives will be announced in the coming weeks.
