Recycling Day Set up for Seniors as Part of Sustainability Month

Waste Reduction Week October 17 to 23

The Manitoba government, working with industry and private-sector partners, continues to expand recycling opportunities during Sustainability Month with a special one-day recycling blitz at a Winnipeg apartment complex, Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox announced today.

“We know people want to make a difference and we want to make an effort to ensure everyone, regardless of age or mobility issues, has the opportunity to recycle,” Cox said.  “We’re always looking for new ways to let people recycle items like electronics and other materials that can’t go in their blue bin.”

Producer-responsible organizations have an active role in recycling and waste reduction and include the Electronic Products Recycling Association, the Product Care Association, Call2Recycle and the Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association.  These organizations, along with Take Pride Winnipeg, have actively supported this special recycling event, the minister noted.

“All around the province Manitobans are doing amazing things to support and encourage more sustainable living,” said Christina McDonald, chief operating officer, Green Manitoba.  “This event demonstrates we can do more together than we could ever do alone.”

There are a dozen different recycling and safe disposal programs in Manitoba that collect materials such as paper and plastic packaging, as well as household hazardous waste like batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and electronics.  Manitoba diverted more than 131 million kilograms of these materials away from landfills in 2014 and with improved access to recycling, even more waste will be kept out of landfills, the minister said.
