New Social Housing and Assisted Living Property for Seniors Opens in Winnipeg

Ellice Place, a unique property that combines social housing and assisted living services for seniors in Winnipeg has completed an $11-million renovation, Families Minister Scott Fielding announced at its grand opening today.

“This is an important project for the community.  There are a growing number of seniors with a moderate income who want to live independently but need supports to make that possible,” said Fielding.  “Today’s grand opening at Ellice Place is a special day for Winnipeg’s West End and for the seniors who will soon call this welcoming place their home.”

Ellice Place, located at 555 Ellice Ave., is a long-term housing option for seniors who can live on their own but may need some assistance with daily tasks.  All 118 studio and one-bedroom units have been fully renovated, including five fully-accessible units for individuals with disabilities, said Fielding.

“Being able to provide home care services to individuals under one roof offers a better continuum of care and improved access for clients,” said Réal Cloutier, chief operating officer, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.  “This creative model, which places affordable housing and supportive health in one location, is an example of how the public sector can work together to meet the needs of seniors in our community.”

The minister noted the property features 24-hour medical alarms in each suite, on-site property management, tenant support services and security.  The building also features several common areas including a kitchen designed for communal baking and cooking activities, a spacious dining hall, outdoor patios, recreational room and a lobby for residents and guests.

Ellice Place will provide the necessary programs and services to help residents remain independent, said Fielding.  Rents will be geared to income and a service package including two hot meals daily, linen service, light housekeeping and recreational activities will be provided to all tenants.  The minister added that on-site offices will help connect tenants with housekeeping, home care services and Manitoba Housing staff.

An open house will be held on Saturday, March 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 555 Ellice Ave.  Prospective tenants are invited to attend in-person or call 204-948-2328, email ellice.shal@gov.mb.ca or visit www.gov.mb.ca/housing/mh/progs/shal.html for more information.
