Manitoba Observes World Consumer Rights Day
As the province observes World Consumer Rights Day today, Justice Minister Heather Stefanson reminded Manitobans to learn and recognize their consumer rights as the government remains dedicated to fostering a fair and thriving marketplace for all.
“Our government remains committed to making Manitoba the most improved province in Canada, which means educating consumers and ensuring their rights are protected and respected,” said Stefanson. “Consumer Rights Day is a reminder for all consumers that they should be treated fairly and honestly, and be given clear, accurate information to help them make informed decisions.”
The minister noted there are many protections available to Manitobans when they:
- buy or repair a vehicle;
- make a purchase online;
- give, receive and use gift cards;
- sign-up for a cellphone contract;
- take out a payday loan or other high-cost credit product; and
- build or buy a new home.
Manitobans are encouraged to learn more about their rights and responsibilities as consumers by downloading the Consumer Protection mobile app. The app provides up-to-date consumer protection information, which users can reference before entering into any purchaser agreement or contract. Manitobans can also stay informed about current marketplace issues by signing up for consumer alerts at www.gov.mb.ca/cca/cpo/consumer_alerts_page.html.
