Province Announces Excellence in Education Award Winners
– – –Awards Recognize Extraordinary Educators Who Motivate and Inspire Students to be Their Best: Wishart
Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart presented excellence in education awards to nine Manitoba educators today, at an event held at the Legislative Building.
“These awards, which include the inaugural Premier’s Award for Excellence in Education, recognize the efforts of a gifted group of Manitoba educators,” said Wishart. “Through their tireless efforts, these dedicated individuals are helping students become critical thinkers and lifelong learners, creating a better Manitoba and a better world.”
Award recipients include:

teaching excellence:
- Robert Abbott, École McIsaac School, Flin Flon School Division;
- Louise Caughell, Happy Thought School, Lord Selkirk School Division; and
- Marjorie White, Dufferin School, Winnipeg School Division.

outstanding new teacher:
- Sarah Olshewski, St. John’s-Ravenscourt School.

outstanding team collaboration:
- Leah Benoit, Sheena Gordon and Ken Hunter, River Heights School, Winnipeg School Division.

outstanding school leader:
- Elaine Giasson, École Dieppe Pembina Trails School Division.

Premier’s Award for Excellence in Education:
- Jason Garton, Tyndall Park Community School, Winnipeg School Division.
The award winners are selected from nominations received from parents, students, school trustees, fellow teachers, and school or school division administrators. All nominees must be educators who hold valid, permanent Manitoba teaching certificates and work directly with kindergarten to Grade 12 students on a daily basis. Nominees for the outstanding school leader award must be principals or vice-principals. Each award winner receives $500 and a framed certificate.
