Province Advises Emergency Preparedness Week Now Underway

– – –
Alert Ready Test Today

The Emergency Management and Public Safety Division of Manitoba Infrastructure has announced Emergency Preparedness Week – EP Week – is underway across Canada.

This year’s theme is ‘Plan. Prepare. Be aware.’  It highlights the importance of having a family plan and emphasizes the need to keep up to date on current weather conditions.  The national campaign points out that disaster resilience begins at home and EP Week is meant to encourage Canadians to know the risks and be prepared to take action to protect themselves and their families during emergencies.

Manitoba Emergency Measures Office (EMO) has staff in place at Ontario’s Provincial Emergency Operation Centre to support flood-fighting efforts in that province.  The placement is through an agreement for inter-provincial and territorial emergency management assistance.

Manitoba EMO also noted the province will be conducting a test of the Alert Ready public alerting system at 1:55 p.m. today.  Alert Ready is the national emergency alert system that notifies residents immediately of potentially life-threatening events.  It delivers alerts to the public by television, radio and websites during emergencies such as tornadoes, floods and biohazards.

Information on EP Week, Alert Ready and more is available at www.manitobaemo.ca.
