Manitoba Promotes Safety on Provincial Hunting Day
Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires encourages Manitobans to celebrate the ninth annual Provincial Hunting Day tomorrow and use the opportunity to promote hunting safety.
“Hunters are part of our heritage in Manitoba and important to our economy,” said Squires. “As we celebrate our roots, we want to stress the importance of personal safety and we urge everyone to stay safe out there.”
Provincial Hunting Day is a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends, the minister noted. The Manitoba government is supporting a special event hosted by the Manitoba Wildlife Federation at the Brandon Gun Club Saturday, Sept. 23. Activities include a calling contest, hunting demonstrations and many other exhibits. More information is available at: www.gov.mb.ca/sd/wildlife/hunting.
Hunters can keep themselves safe by following such advice as:
- always handle firearms with care and attention;
- never shoot unless you’re sure of your target and what lies beyond;
- wear appropriate hunting clothing and dress for the weather;
- use a safety harness in a tree stand, and use a rope to raise and lower weapons;
- make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’ll be back; and
- always take a survival / first aid kit with you.
