Province Announces University of Winnipeg Board of Regents Appointments



Manitoba Education and Training advises it has appointed five new members to the board of regents of the University of Winnipeg (U of W).

  • Dr. Malcolm Bird (Winnipeg) is an associate professor of political science at the U of W.  He graduated from Carleton University with a PhD in public policy and administration.  He currently serves as president of the St. Ignatius School Parent Advisory Committee and vice-president of the U of W Faculty Club.
  • Marlene Gallagher (Lorette) is a writer, educator and researcher.  She attended residential school and works with schools to teach about the history of First Nations peoples and the legacy of residential schools.  She speaks fluent Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) and is currently a curriculum writer/editor/advisor for Portage and Main Press.  Gallagher is also a member of the Speakers Bureau for the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba and a cultural advisor for MMM/WSP Engineering Consulting Services.  She was previously a consultant for the Province of Manitoba, where she worked with schools to support Indigenous education, cultural awareness and the Community Schools Partnership Initiative concept.
  • Bob Grant (Beausejour) is a retired teacher, having worked in the Agassiz School Division for 32 years, including six as vice-principal.  He is also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
  • Hamath Sy (Winnipeg) is a senior manager at Canadian National Railways (CN).  He has served in various roles at CN including commodity manager, market analyst and market manager.  He holds a masters of science degree in economics from the University of Manitoba and previously served as a policy economist for the Province of Manitoba.
  • Rachel Beazley is a first-year student in the Integrated Education Program at the U of W.  She volunteers as a health and wellness peer educator, as well as with the U of W’s chapter of Jack.org, a national organization that supports youth mental health initiatives.  She also serves on the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Youth Mental Health Advisory Council.

Manitoba Education and Training would like to thank all outgoing members for their service.

The U of W board of regents has overall responsibility for the university and may determine all matters of university policy, except those specifically assigned to the senate.  The board consists of 36 members.
