Manitoba Moving to Improve Reintegration Services and Reduce Recidivism with Responsible Reintegration Initiative
As part of its strategy to reform the criminal justice system, Manitoba has developed a new model for probation services that will better focus its reintegration services for offenders leaving custody, Justice Minister Heather Stefanson announced today.
“This initiative is part of a broader approach to criminal justice system reform that includes crime prevention, restorative justice and responsible reintegration,” said Stefanson. “Through these efforts, our government has committed further resources to community-based programs that help end cycles of crime and destruction in our communities.”
The Responsible Reintegration Initiative (RRI) is being staffed by realigning positions currently associated with three small specialized probation units, the Gang Response and Suppression Plan, Auto Theft Unit and the Spotlight Unit. The minister noted intensive supervision of these high risk individuals will continue along with the RRI program.
“An individual in custody of the criminal justice system requires the proper supports to be successfully reintegrated into society,” added Stefanson. “We are taking a more focused approach to services that allow for a successful transition from custody to community life. This initiative will help reduce recidivism by connecting offenders with supports like housing, education, employment and addictions treatment services.”
This new model provides supports to a broader group of offenders and individuals, expanding the populations that Manitoba Justice currently supports and supervises.
