Reforestation Will Continue: Squires

The Manitoba government has posted a request for pre-qualification (RFPQ) as it seeks to bring new life to Pineland Forest Nursery after the operation in its current form winds down on Dec. 31, 2018, Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires announced today.

“We expect there will be significant interest in this incredible asset and we look forward to an interesting array of ideas and proposals for this opportunity,” said Squires.  “We also want to be clear that the province will continue its commitment to reforestation and seedling planting, maintain the vital seed bank that is part of the Pineland operation and ensure the research being conducted by the University of Winnipeg continues at the site.”

Pineland Forest Nursery, near Hadashville, is currently provincially-operated and has over five dozen greenhouses, including one large area of 14 inter-connected greenhouse sections heated by a biomass boiler, as well as 50 free standing greenhouses and a two-bay research greenhouse on approximately seven acres.  In addition, there are more than 300 acres of other growing area, which could be available on a long-term lease.

The RFPQ is expected to generate significant interest, with opportunities for new and creative ventures in areas such as agriculture, horticulture, other forest nursery companies, or even cannabis production. The detailed request for proposals will be issued to those who meet the criteria in the RFPQ.

Manitoba has many economic advantages with its central location, experienced local workforce and low cost of living. Pineland is located within one hour of Winnipeg and beside the Trans-Canada Highway, allowing for easy transportation in any direction.

Full details on the RFPQ are now available through www.merx.com. The RFPQ submission deadline is July 4, 2018.
