Significant Heritage Funding Increase through New Heritage Resources Conservation Grant

More than Triple the Funds Will Be Available for Heritage Conservation: Cox

As part of its 100-Day Action Plan, the Manitoba government has created the Heritage Resources Conservation Grant, which will more than triple funding to support heritage projects, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Cathy Cox announced today.

“We are committed to preserving Manitoba’s many unique heritage buildings,” said Cox.  “This is especially important as we head into 2020 and the celebration of Manitoba 150.  This program will help community groups and organizations maintain and restore important heritage treasures for future generations.”

Earlier this year, the province announced the $15-million Heritage Resources Fund designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of Manitoba's heritage infrastructure.  This fund, managed by The Winnipeg Foundation (TWF), will offer support for projects through the newly created Heritage Resources Conservation Grant.

“It is critically important we take steps to protect our heritage buildings so future generations can not only enjoy them, but learn from them,” said Rick Frost, CEO, The Winnipeg Foundation. “The Winnipeg Foundation appreciates the confidence the Manitoba government has shown by investing more resources into the Heritage Resources Fund; helping ensure there is support in perpetuity for the stewardship of Manitoba’s special heritage places.”

The new grant replaces the Designated Heritage Building Grant program, and is expected to have approximately $750,000 available annually, the minister said, adding this will provide significantly more funding than the $220,000 available through the old grant program.

The Heritage Resources Conservation Grant will support capital work to conserve heritage features and support research to identify new properties, conservation planning and building assessment, as well as education and training.
