Manitoba Research Projects Receive More Than $2 Million In Funding

The Manitoba government will provide more than $2.3 million to support 19 research projects at the universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg relating to health, the environment and the development of new technologies, Science, Technology, Energy and Mines Minister Jim Rondeau announced today.

“The Manitoba government is a strong supporter of science and health research, innovation and technology,” said Rondeau. “Research and innovation in the 21st century will be a major player in global competitiveness and provide good jobs and better lives for Manitobans.”

“This funding from the Manitoba Research and Innovation Fund will provide an important stimulus to the research capacity at the University of Manitoba,” said Dr. Digvir Jayas, acting vice-president (research) of the University of Manitoba.  “Our researchers are among the very best and this support is critical for these scientists and scholars to have the tools and equipment necessary to carry out innovative research programs.”

Rondeau noted one of projects received funding for a nuclear magnetic resonance console to support the biomedical and materials research of two University of Manitoba chemistry researchers.  Dr. Frank Schweizer’s work will help to develop medications against infectious diseases and novel nutraceuticals to fight obesity and diabetes.  Dr. Scott Kroeker’s research will help design effective nuclear waste storage materials, resulting in safe disposal solutions.

The funding is provided through the Manitoba Research and Innovation Fund. The fund was created to help increase the capacity of the province’s universities, colleges, hospitals and other institutions to carry out important, world-class research and development. Since 2003, it has provided over $73 million in research and innovation support for health and agriculture, technology and aerospace, cultural and new media industries, and alternative energy developments.
