Open House to Feature a Diverse Display of Maps From the Archives: Simard

The Archives of Manitoba will be hosting an open house this weekend in Winnipeg on April 12 and 13, from 1 to 5 p.m. to highlight a diverse array of maps from the archives, Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Glen Simard announced today.

“Our province’s rich documentary past is available to you at the Archives of Manitoba,” said Simard. “I encourage everyone to visit the archives to learn about the history of Manitoba and its people, and discover the unique display of maps being highlighted during this weekend’s open house.”

The open house will feature a selection of maps from the archives dating from the 1700s to the 20th century and a film about map making will be available for viewing in the Archives Research Room.

The display will include several maps showing the development of mapping across western North America and the Arctic in the 1700s and early 1800s. Visitors will see maps that incorporate Indigenous knowledge and place names. Several maps that document the Red River Settlement and early Manitoba, including the Peguis-Selkirk Treaty of 1817, will also be available for viewing.

In honour of the City of Winnipeg’s 150th anniversary on Jan. 19, 2024, various maps of Winnipeg will be on display including a 1911 map that illustrates Winnipeg Trolley Zones, the minister added.

“Archival maps require careful handling and are usually consulted one at a time by an individual researcher,” said Scott Goodine, archivist of Manitoba. “We’re excited to bring the maps out of the vaults and invite Manitobans to drop by and see these incredible archival records.”

Under the Archives and Recordkeeping Act, the Archives of Manitoba holds the records of the Manitoba government and its agencies, the courts and the legislature, and is home to the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives. It also preserves recorded information of all media and provides access to that information, with a mission to protect information of fundamental significance to community identities, well-being and individual and collective self-knowledge, the minister noted.
