Manitoba Government Launches 45-Day Consultation on Hospitality Sector Regulation

The Manitoba government is taking action to prevent Manitobans from sexual exploitation by launching a 45-day public consultation on the hospitality sector customer registry regulation, Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine, minister responsible for women and gender equity, announced today.
“We are taking a proactive, co-ordinated approach to protecting some of our most vulnerable citizens from sexual exploitation,” said Fontaine. “By working across government departments and in community we can make sure we have policies in place for the people who need them to stay safe.”
The proposed regulation falls under the Hospitality Sector Customer Registry Act and would address all forms of sexual exploitation by requiring hotels and other temporary accommodations to hold customer information in a registry and appropriate identification from guests using their services, noted the minister.
The regulation also sets out procedures that would help law enforcement investigate sexual exploitation by providing police with access to customer registry information in hotels and temporary accommodations. It would also enable police to issue an urgent demand to access a registry without a warrant in circumstances where persons subjected to sexual exploitation are believed to be at risk of serious injury or death.
