Construction of $6.5-million, 24-unit Project to Kick Off: Irvin-Ross

Brandon families will soon have improved access to affordable housing as a result of a provincial HOMEWorks! investment of more than $6.5 million for a 24-unit family housing project, Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross announced today.

WBS Construction of Winkler was awarded the contract and will begin work on the project this month.

“This investment will add 24 units of much-needed affordable housing in Brandon and contributes to this government’s commitment to add 1,500 new social housing units over the next five years,” said Irvin-Ross.  “We are continuing with a comprehensive housing plan through HOMEWorks!, our long-term housing strategy that will also upgrade existing homes and involve people in social housing in the construction and renovation projects to develop skills and community pride.”

The complex will be situated at 10-15th St. N. and will be owned and managed by Manitoba Housing. Rents will be set at or below median market rents for the community.

The project will consist of three- and four-bedroom, two-storey townhouses. All ground-floor units will feature a no-step entrance, wider doorways and hallways, and accessible bathrooms. Two ground floor units will be fully accessible to tenants in wheelchairs.

All of the homes will be required to meet or exceed Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart design standards. One building will be constructed to the Canada Green Building Design Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver designation.

Our investments in affordable housing support Manitoba families and are a key pillar of this government’s $744-million ALL Aboard poverty-reduction strategy to build stronger, healthier communities,” said Irvin-Ross.

The minister thanked the City of Brandon for donating the 1.5 acres of land for the complex.
