Minister Acknowledges 10-year Anniversary of NA!

Neighbourhoods Alive!, one of the provincial government’s key community economic development initiatives, is being expanded to the Elmwood area in Winnipeg with $90,000 in funding, Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross announced today.

“Neighbourhoods Alive! is our long-term, community-based social and economic strategy to support and encourage community-driven revitalization efforts,” said Irvin-Ross. “This is the program’s 10th year and we are proud of how it has assisted economic growth in eight communities across Manitoba.”

Irvin-Ross announced that $90,000, through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, will be provided to the Elmwood community to support the expansion of Neighbourhoods Alive! in that area.  The Chalmers neighbourhood will be targeted within the community for project support.

The Neighbourhood Renewal Fund helps neighbourhood organizations, representing residents and other local interests to strengthen local capacity and revitalize urban neighbourhoods through a broad range of locally planned initiatives.

A community consultation meeting will be held June 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chalmers Community Centre.  The community consultation meeting will be an opportunity to describe Neighbourhoods Alive!, outline the scope, boundaries and process of the NA! expansion in Elmwood and have a community discussion to set out community priorities.

“The consultation process is an important piece of the NA! initiative as it involves local residents in the planning and implementing of their own ideas to improve their community,” said Irvin-Ross.

Following the community consultation, proposal development support will be available to community groups through Neighbourhoods Alive! The first intake of proposals will open until July 30.

Since the inception of Neighbourhoods Alive! in 2000, the provincial government has supported NA! programs in Thompson, Brandon, Flin Flon, The Pas, Selkirk, Dauphin, Portage la Prairie and
inner-city communities throughout Winnipeg.
