Disaster Financial Assistance Program Provided For May Heavy Rains In The Interlake

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Steve Ashton, minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Organization, has announced a $680,000 Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) program to assist areas of the Interlake impacted by heavy rains in May of 2006.

“This Disaster Financial Assistance program will assist municipalities, First Nations and private individuals with losses from the end of May heavy rain flooding event in the Interlake,” said Ashton.

Communities that are eligible for assistance include the Rural Municipality of Fisher, Peguis First Nation and Fisher River Cree Nation.

Private individuals with flood damages should contact their local authority and request an application for Disaster Financial Assistance.  Applications are also available online at http://www.manitobaemo.ca.

Disaster Financial Assistance is generally available for evacuation costs, costs to prevent or limit damage and non-insurable losses to homes and essential contents, small businesses, farms and essential public infrastructure.

The cost of this DFA program is not expected to reach the minimum required for federal cost sharing under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements. However, the Government of Canada will be advised of the Interlake flooding DFA program as a precautionary measure.
