Manitobans Invited To Comment On Gift Card Legislation
The general public, consumer organizations and the business sector are being asked to comment on provincial legislation that prohibits expiry dates and fees on most gift cards and certificates, Finance Minister Greg Selinger announced today.
“In November 2007 we made changes to the Consumer Protection Act to better protect consumers when purchasing gift cards and certificates,” said Selinger. “We feel it is important to know how Manitobans feel about this new regulation so we made it a requirement the regulation be reviewed within 18 months of the effective date.”
Selinger said consumers and organizations are being asked to provide their comments and suggestions by March 1. Respondents can also request meetings with staff from Manitoba’s Consumers Bureau.
Comments or suggestions can be provided to the bureau by letter to 302 – 258 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 0B6, by telephone at 204-945-3800 or toll-free within Manitoba at 1‑800‑782-0067, or by e-mail to consumersbureau@gov.mb.ca.
Additional information on the requirements can be obtained from the bureau’s website at www.gov.mb.ca/finance/cca/consumb/ or by calling the bureau at the above telephone numbers. The regulations are available at web2.gov.mb.ca/laws/regs/pdf/c200-098.07.pdf.
