Memorial to Remember Sacrifice of Those Lost in Line of Duty: Premier Selinger

The Manitoba government and three foundations that honour fallen firefighters, peace officers and workershave selected the southwest corner of Memorial Park as the site for a new monument, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.

“Too many firefighters, peace officers and workers have lost their lives on the job, and it’s important that we remember the sacrifices they have made,” said Premier Selinger.  “We continue to work with our partners to make this memorial a priority.”

The premier noted the final cost and design and construction timelines of the memorial are underway.

The Manitoba Fallen Fighters Memorial Foundation, the Peace Officers Memorial Foundation and the Workers Memorial Foundation were established by legislation in 2007.

“With the creation of this monument, the memories of our fallen comrades will live on,” said Alex Forrest, president, Manitoba Fallen Fighters Memorial Foundation.  “We look forward to continuing to work with our partners on this important project.”

The foundations have the authority to raise funds for the design, creation, placement and ongoing maintenance of monuments to honour each group’s members.

“As we move forward, it’s important to honour the memories of those no longer with us,” said Rob Belanger, president, Peace Officers Memorial Foundation.  “We will continue our work to make this memorial a reality.”

In addition to raising funds, the three foundations promote public awareness and recognition of the positive contributions of their members who died while on the job.

“This project honours the dedication and commitment of people across the province,” said Dave Sauer of the Workers Memorial Foundation.  “We will continue to work together to get this monument built as soon as possible.”
