Province Provides $100,000 for Japan Earthquake

The provincial government is providing $100,000 in funding to the Manitoba Council for International Co-operation (MCIC) to be used for relief and redevelopment work as a result of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Japan, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.

“Manitoba has been fortunate to receive support from around the world when we’ve needed it the most and, like so many times before, we’re returning the favour.  We know this contribution will help the thousands of people who need it as a result of this catastrophe,” said Selinger.  “Our thoughts are with the people of Japan who are enduring unimaginable suffering in the wake of this earthquake.”

Early estimates suggest the earthquake, one of the most powerful on record, has taken thousands of lives.

People concerned about Canadian friends and family possibly affected by the disaster can call the federal Department of Foreign Affairs at 1-800-387-3124 or email sos@international.gc.ca.

The provincial government has previously supported relief efforts of the MCIC in response to several international disasters including the devastating earthquakes in Haiti, Indonesia, Pakistan and the landslide in the Philippines.
