Attorney General Dave Chomiak has announced the appointment of Doreen Redhead to the provincial court of Manitoba, effective immediately.

 

“Manitobans will be well served by the range of experiencesMs. Redhead will bring to the judiciary,” said Chomiak. “Her legal background includes practising corporate and labour law in the north, which will add depth and diversity to the bench.” 

 

Redhead graduated from the University of Manitoba Law School in 1996.  She also holds a bachelor of arts in sociology. She articled with Lofchick, Jones & Associates in Winnipeg and has practised law on behalf of the Fox Lake First Nation in Gillam and the Keewatin Tribal Council in Thompson.

 

This is the first appointment of a First Nation woman to the bench in Manitoba.

 

Redhead has served on a number of boards including the Keewatin Housing Association and Broadband Communications North, and has been actively involved in a number of other committees and associations. 

 

The new judge was selected from a list of candidates recommended by an independent judicial nominating committee.  The committee was chaired by the chief judge of the provincial court of Manitoba Raymond E. Wyant and included three community representatives, representatives of the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association, and a provincial court judge.

 

A swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled as soon as possible.
